Viungo kwa wazazi na watoto

Wasaidie watoto wako kujifunza Kiingereza
VIFAA BILA MALIPO KUTOKA UINGEREZA
British Council
VIFAA BILA MALIPO KUTOKA MAREKANI
Khan Academy

Help your children to learn english
There are a number of materials on the internet that you can use with your children to improve their English, many of which are free. Below is a selection of some of the best:
FREE MATERIALS FROM THE UK
British Council
The British Council, which is the part of the British government that promotes British culture (including the English language) in other countries, has a number of useful free resources for learning English on its web site.
These include:
This has games, songs, stories and other activities for younger children (ages 5-12)
and
This has exercises more suitable for teenagers (ages 13-19), including grammar and vocabulary practice.
While they are looking to sell places on their own courses (usually expensive and of high quality), all of the resources on the British Council web site are free to use. There is also helpful guidance for parents who want to teach their children English at home.
BBC Learning English
The BBC (UK state broadcaster) provides some children’s stories to help children learn English. Your children need to be at A2 level (Pre-Intermediate) for this.
Among the other web sites, Cambridge University Press has a number of activities for children, ordered by level (pre-A1 to A2). Unfortunately, at the time of writing, not all of the exercises work on a mobile phone (the web site does warn that they have been designed for a computer or tablet). The songs, which are also on Youtube, all seem to work, and for younger children, there is a free app, called Monkey Puzzles, where children can test their English through playing games.
Note that the BBC, British Council and Cambridge all have free learning materials for adult learners, too. We will look at these in another article.
FREE MATERIALS FROM THE USA
Khan Academy
Khan Academy Kids, (for children aged 2-8), is part of the Khan Academy web site and Youtube channel, run by a US charity that aims to make education available to everyone. Note that for older children who can understand English, there are also useful lessons in other subjects such as Mathematics and Science. You need an email address to register for Khan Academy Kids, but once you have registered, everything is free. There is even an app that includes content that will work offline.
Sesame Street
Sesame Street (for children aged 1 – 5) is an American children’s educational TV series that uses puppets to teach basic educational skills. It has free games and songs in English that children who are too young for school can use. Many of the songs are also available on Youtube and Sesame Street has also produced a number of apps. Some of these are free and the others generally cost between around TZS 2,500 and 11,500 (1-5 USD) per app. They can be used offline.
PAID COURSES
For those parents willing to pay a monthly subscription, Lingokids (0-8 years) and Studycat (3-10 years), are two of the most popular apps. Neither is cheap but both have high ratings from parents on the app stores. At the time of writing, Lingokids costs around 35000 TZS (or 15 USD) per month and Studycat costs around 35000 TZS (15 USD) per month or 140,000 TZS (60 USD) per year. As you might expect, both have a wider range of materials available than any of the free apps.
Be careful when dealing with apps that require subscriptions as sometimes neither the app makers or the app store operators make it clear how to cancel the subscription. This video (in English) shows how to cancel any subscriptions if your phone uses the Android operating system. (There is also one for Iphone here).
Kiingereza – Hatua kwa Hatua
For adults and older children (12+ years), particularly those having problems making the transition from primary to secondary school, Kiingereza – Hatua kwa Hatua is the only serious English course written in Swahili and aimed at beginners. It is more like a traditional textbook than a series of games but contains hundreds of recordings of native speakers, along with grammar explanations and exercises for the learner to complete. At time of writing, it costs around 4,700 TZS or 2 USD per month or can be bought for 21,000 TZS (8 USD).
There are many more resources on the internet to help children learn and we will try to update this list whenever we hear of anything else that is useful.
